Trying to narrow down the best beaches on a lush, tropical island that has roughly 200 miles of coastline is no easy task. But there are several recommended beaches on Hawai‘i’s Big Island that will fulfill an idyllic time in paradise. On the west side, Hāpuna Beach (pictured) and Mauna Kea Beach have both received nods by “Dr. Beach” as being America’s Best. For snorkeling, head over to Kahalu‘u Beach in Keauhou, which is known for an abundance of honu, the Hawaiian green sea turtle. On the Kohala Coast, Samuel Spencer Beach Park is known for its calm waters and protected reef. Over in Hilo, Onekahakaha Beach Park is a favorite with residents, since its sand-bottom shallow pools are one of the safest swimming areas on this side of the island, making it a great choice for families and kids.
